doTERRA Kids Line Overview

In this blog post I will be overviewing DoTerras kid line and giving my honest opinion as a certified aromatherapist. They only have 7 oils, pre-diluted in rollers only so it’s not as large as others I have seen. The fact they only offer pre-diluted rollers (when dilutions are not easily obtained from large MLM companies like DoTerra) throws me a little bit, especially since half the blends they offer would be extremely beneficial as aromatics instead of topical use. But let’s dive into what they offer and how safe they seem for children.

  • Thinker: Vetiver, Peppermint, Clementine diluted in fractionated coconut oil

Already I am not in love with this one, I am not a fan of peppermint for young children. This does say on the website not for children under 3 so this passes with Tisserand, however Lea Jacobson recommends not using peppermint with children under 6 as it can cause severe breathing issues. It’s diluted, however last I checked DoTerra doesn’t release dilutions and with peppermint have a max dilution of 5.4% so we don’t know if that exceeds the topical max. While technically safe to use, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable using it on myself let alone my children. But if you feel comfortable, true to their word this is safe for ages 3+ so I have to give points for at least having a suitable age limit.

  • Calmer: Lavender, Canaga, Buddha wood and Roman Chamomile diluted in fractionated coconut oil

This one does check out, all these oils are kid safe. The website still says 3+ so I feel that is great. However, they do not disclose dilution and Cananga has a topical max of .8%  so this could potentially create a reaction. I recommend doing a patch test. It’s not my favorite, but. I don’t hate it.

  • Stronger: Cedarwood, Litsea, Frankincense and Rose diluted in fractionated coconut oil

Well guys I am stumped on this one, Litsea is not an oil I am familiar with and for that reason I am not comfortable even recommending this one. Oils are powerful and an oil that isn’t common just shouldn’t be used on children in my opinion. The fact I can’t find anything on this one in all my books is a bit concerning. It’s a definite no from me, just avoid this one.

  • Tamer: Spearmint, Japanese peppermint, Ginger, Black pepper and Parsley seed diluted in fractionated coconut oil

I don’t have anything on Japanese peppermint, so that makes me cautious. I couldn’t say if it’s like peppermint or if its stronger or if its just a gimmick. On top of that this blend contains Parsley which is not recommended for adult use, let alone with children. I can’t find which parsley it is either so depending on the type it has a max of 14.6% or 1.1% and with not really knowing dilutions this one is a huge red flag for me. Avoid this one.

  • Rescuer: Copiaba, Lavender, Spearmint and Zanthoxylum diluted in fractionated coconut oil

I don’t really like this one either, Zanthoxylum (which is Tomar seed) is a bit of a question mark for me. There isn’t a lot of info if it’s safe for kids and when in doubt don’t use it on kids.

  • Steady: Amyris, Balsam fir and Magnolia diluted in fractionated coconut oil

Okay this one isn’t so bad. They are at least all kid safe oils. Still unsure on the dilution but it’s not as bad as the others. It’s got to be my favorite one out of all their kid blends.

  • Brave: Wild Orange, Amyris, Osmanthus and Cinnamon diluted in fractionated coconut oil

Without for sure the dilution I can’t recommend this. Cinnamon has either a .1% or .6% dilution depending on the type. So if there is more than 1 drop this can be irritating. I wouldn’t risk it. Cinnamon isn’t really an oil needed with young children anyways as it has more potential to burn or cause a reaction.

Okay, so with only 2 oils out of 7 really seeming like something I would use, let alone recommend, this isn’t really a kid safe line that I like. There are too many what ifs for my taste, and a lot of unanswered questions about the dilution. Wether they will give an honest or not is up for debate, but they fact they don’t readily provide dilutions in the descriptions is not something I’m found of. It shouldn’t be difficult to obtain that kind of information. And to be honest, I gave up trying with the Latin names for this post because it just wasn’t that easy for me, I will link posts so you can get the exact product but I have to be honest here. This is one of my least favorite kids line so far. It just doesn’t look good to me.
