The Healing Power of Essential Oils Book Review
My first impressions with this book, were quite frankly, not good. I didn’t know a lot about the author, Eric Zielinkski, and what little I did know came from the Netflix documentary on Essential Oils. I must admit my first impressions were totally wrong, and moving forward I will go into these books with an open mind.
Book Review:
I really like this book actually. I felt that there was a great coverage on essential oil knowledge and safety, as well as how to utilize the oils in your daily life. The author tied in personal experience and even shared their own recipes that he used with his own family. The safety advice was spot on, and despite the encouragement to ingest essential oils it was at least emphasized several times over to make sure to do so properly and with care.
I wasn’t a huge fan on the parts on ingestion, but like I said the safety was at least there. It wasn’t encouraged to just drink oils and instead using a proper emulsifier or capsule was encouraged. If someone was going to follow this advice in the book, I feel as though nothing bad would come out of it.
I greatly appreciated the layout and ease of the book, it covered quite a bit but it did not feel like it was overwhelming. In fact it was an easy read, and I felt that it was insightful to both the beginner and advanced essential oil user. However this is definitely geared more towards a beginner.
Overall I enjoyed the book, and the information, and I really appreciated that the safety was on point. Oftentimes I find that books lack in the safety aspect and this book followed the appropriate guidelines and even quoted Tisserand often. The due diligence was certainly done when writing this book and the research was not lacking.
I would honestly recommend this book, I think a lot of people could get use out of it. I actually got this one for free with a promo-I just paid shipping. They often run promos on their stuff as well, with an entire online education site for essential oils. It’s definitely worth checking out.
If you are a beginner looking to up your essential oil knowledge this is honestly a perfect book. It covers a lot, it’s safe and sound advice and it’s super informative. I still caution on the ingestion aspect of the book, but like I said if you follow the advice exactly there isn’t going to be much risk.
Final thoughts:
I also wanted to tie in my thoughts from how the Z family was portrayed in the Netflix doc. The reason I was so wary is because in that documentary they portrayed Eric Z using essential oils very unsafely and taking a condescending tone on aromatherapy as whole. They made him seem like a terrible guy who was only looking to make money and I didn’t like that. However looking at his stuff, that doesn’t seem to be the case and it is quite obvious Netflix purposely edited the footage to make him seem like a terrible guy.
One example was when he made his 3 year old a smoothie, and goes to get Peppermint essential oil to add. I freaked out when I saw that. However, he was very specific in his book that you shouldn’t add essential oils to drinks undiluted. This made me realize that more than likely he pre-dilutes the oil and then adds that to the smoothies. I still wouldn’t give my 3 year old a smoothie with peppermint essential oil, mostly because we just don’t do that, but he wasn’t doing anything unsafe. Unless he is directly contradicting himself, Netflix purposely left somethings out. I do not believe that he was being contradictory anyways, since he was directly quoting the exact things he said in his book, just with cleverly edited parts omitting the safety and true facts.
I felt the need to include this because Netflix really painted him out to be a bad guy. Yet, I discovered that to not be the case at all. Oftentimes, natural remedies are demonized and this is just another example of the media doing just that.
In short, this book was actually really good. I loved it, and first impressions here were clearly wrong. If you don’t have this book I would go ahead and get it or borrow it to read. It’s definitely worth it, and I feel it’s worth it to most aromatherapy enthusiasts.
