Essential Oils to Diffuse for Reading

It’s no secret that I am a huge book person. If you have spent any time on my social media, you’ll see I’m a little…obsessed. I used to think that aromatherapy and books couldn’t mix. Still, I realized that I can use aromatherapy to my benefit especially if I am consuming books at an alarming rate. On top of that, I do have a lot of education-related reading I need to get done as well, and essential oils are a wonderful tool for helping keep focus, curb headaches, and even ease the reader’s wrist (aka, I held a book for too long and my wrists are now sore). So let’s look at some essential oils and blends that would be perfect for the adventurous reader. Or even some essential oils that can help stay focused and keep the mind sharp when trying to complete school work/education.

Essential Oils to Diffuse for Focus

  • Peppermint: Peppermint is known for its sharp minty aroma and is often used for focus and alertness. This one would be great to use if you are more tired and want to stay awake to focus. Peppermint is noted as safe for ages 3+ but some people prefer to wait until their child is 6.

  • Rosemary 1,8 cineole: Rosemary, the cineole chemotype, has a strong herbaceous scent and is known for its properties of helping the mind to focus and stay alert. Rosemary is noted safe as 6+ as it is cineole-rich

  • Spearmint: Spearmint is similar to peppermint, although a milder mint aroma, and shares similar properties in helping to stay focused and alert. Spearmint is safe for all ages, the general recommendation is to use essential oils for ages 2+.

  • Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus is great for improving clarity, aiding in mental focus, and stimulating the mind. This oil is recommended for ages 3+ but some prefer to wait until ages 6 or 10 due to its strong cineole content.

  • Frankincense: Frankincense is generally noted to be a calming and grounding oil, but can also help to improve mental focus and quiet the mind. This oil is safe for all ages, the general recommendation is to use essential oils for ages 2+

  • Cedarwood: Cedarwood is generally noted to be a calming and grounding oil, but can also help to improve mental focus and quiet the mind. This oil is safe for all ages, the general recommendation is to use essential oils for ages 2+

Essential Oils to Diffuse for Calming Effects

  • Bergamot: Bergamot is a herbaceous and citrus aroma, noted for being uplifting and soothing to the user bergamot is a favorite for relaxing and calming down. • Ylang-ylang: Ylang-ylang has a sweet floral scent and is popular to use in calming or bedtime blends. This is a perfect oil to mix with lavender to create a lovely floral aroma, please note that while this oil is safe to inhale for all ages, the topical use is noted as safe for ages 2+ (and the general recommendation is to begin using essential oils ages 2+)

  • Sweet orange: Sweet orange is a favorite calming oil, helping to aid emotional balance and relaxation. This oil is safe for all ages, the general recommendation is to use essential oils for ages 2+

  • Frankincense: Frankincense is generally noted to be a calming and grounding oil. This oil is safe for all ages, the general recommendation is to use essential oils for ages 2+

    Essential Oil Blends

  • Focus Blend for Adults: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Rosemary

  • Focus Blend for Kids: Spearmint, Cedarwood

  • Calming Blend: Lavender, Ylang-ylang, Frankincense

  • Calming Blend 2: Bergamot, Sweet orange, Vetiver

  • Grounding blend: Frankincense, Vetiver, Ylang-ylang

When making your blends you can blend by using the 1-3-6 ratio or blend evenly. For example for the adult focus blend you could do 1 drop of peppermint 3 drops of Rosemary to 6 drops of Eucalyptus. You generally want to use different quantities of essential oils when making your blends, but you do not have to do this. Blending can be what you want to make it. So have some fun, play around with scents, and see what you like best. A large part of how these essential oils can help is how much you enjoy the scent, an essential oil can be noted as relaxing but if you dislike the aroma it won’t calm you down very much.
